Beer of the Week (February 18, 2007)
Because literature, like baseball, would be a lot less interesting without alcohol.
This week’s beer of the week is: Sly Rye Porter.

Brewed by: Yazoo Brewing Company
The Tap: Yazoo’s Sly Rye Porter is distinctive, both chocolatey (as you’d expect from a porter) and spicy with a dry finish. It also has a beautiful ruby color when held up to the light–although you’ll want to spend more time drinking it than looking at it.
The Coaster: Just because they’re based in my home town doesn’t mean that Yazoo Brewing Company gets a free pass. They get high marks for hard work and making excellent beer. Their tap room, located in an old warehouse, is the best place to enjoy their beer. It can be hard to find, but fortunately their web site has instructions. And some nights it’s so popular you might be lucky just to get your glass filled. Fortunately you can find Yazoo brews on tap around town, and their Pale Ale and Dos Perros (also excellent) are available in six-packs. You can also pick up a gallon “growler” of your favorite Yazoo brew at the tap room, or at various places around town (fortunately their site has a Yazoo beer locator.
Rating: Five pints (out of six)
Comments
Yazoo? That was an eighties band wasn’t it? Whatever, sounds like a winner if it gets people packing in a warehouse on a saturday night just for the brew, and not because there are chicks dancing in the tables. Nothing wrong with birds dancing on tables, but it just says lot about a beer that packs them in based on it’s own and not just some gimick.
