Word Of The Week: February 16th, 2008

letterg.jpg This week’s word of the week is: gibbous. Derived from the Latin word gibbus, meaning “hump”, the word gibbous is now used almost exclusively to describe a three-quarter, or humped, Moon. Not quite as striking as either a full or crescent Moon, the gibbous Moon is still beautiful, like Artemis peeking around a veil at us.

Now there’s a tough one to fit into everyday conversation!

Yeah, I know. Unfortunately gibbous means “humped”. If it just meant “hump” then you could start calling Wednesday “gibbous day”.
