Even though I couldn’t begin to say what, exactly, defines art, every once in a while I try to define my own aesthetic tastes. What is it that I like, what appeals to me? And I just can’t do it because it’s an instinctive, gut reaction. Although I’ve never actually found the exact quote, an English teacher of mine used to say that Anne Sexton defined a good poem as one that made you feel like you’d been kicked in the stomach. I don’t know that I’d go that far, but many of the pieces from Red Nose Studio just take my breath away. Here’s a portrait of Edgar Allan Poe, done as a cover for Read Magazine:

Check out some of the other stuff. It’s eerie and funny and just brilliant. A lot of it seems like a cross between Tim Burton and Dorothea Tanning. And I like it.
